Finnish success story – history
The long history of Ramirent Finland Oy can be described as the beginning of the success story of the entire Ramirent Group. Today’s Ramirent business operations originally began in Finland.
Pioneer in equipment rental
Ramirent Finland Oy’s extensive experience in the construction industry is evidenced by the company’s history dating back to 1955. At that time, three active engineers founded a company called Rakennusmies. The time was right for this kind of activity: Finland was busy building a welfare society, and there was a strong demand for new factories, offices and apartments. The young company started its operations by marketing steel nails that made it easy to attach floor skirtings to concrete. Other successful products included a safer oil heater and formwork tie. However, the company sensed reform: manual labour was disappearing and machines were coming. With this change, the company began to import French Potain tower cranes.
Expansion of activities
Potain was a success. The 1960s were entering the era of prefabricated elements, so cranes and moving equipment were in demand. Rakennusmies expanded its range with these products and precast elements. Over the years, companies specializing in different functions were merged, and this entity became one of Finland’s largest developers. The operations consisted of importing, manufacturing, selling and renting machinery and equipment, as well as installation and maintenance services. The company had its own production facilities for the manufacture of precast concrete elements, stair systems and precast elements made of steel, among other things.
Growth and development – acquisitions and going public
During the “crazy years” of construction in the 1980s, the then company A-Rakennusmies grew rapidly through acquisitions. With the acquisition of Rakennuslaite Oy, A-Rakennusmies’ position strengthened especially outside the Helsinki metropolitan area. The company had a more comprehensive product range and a nationwide rental network. After the difficult recession years of the 1990s, the construction industry had embraced the idea of rental equipment and machinery. At this point, the company was ready to list on the stock exchange. In 1998, A-Rakennusmies became a listed company.
New direction – specialized subsidiaries and disconnection from parent company
At the turn of the millennium, the company had grown into the largest player in the industry in Finland with its comprehensive product range and service network close to the customer. The new season was also indicated by the change of name through various stages to Ramirent, better suited to the international market. The home field was further strengthened by acquiring Telineykköset Oy and Uudenmaan Telinepiste Oy, from which Teline-Rami Oy, specializing in scaffolding, and Rami-Cranes Oy, focusing on tower cranes and lifts, were arranged. In 2001, the name of the company was changed to the concise Ramirent Oyj. The current Ramirent Finland Oy and the parent company Ramirent Plc were later separated from Ramirent Oyj.
New owner
In 2019, the winds of change blew again. The French global equipment rental group Loxam acquired the entire share capital of Ramirent and Ramirent was delisted. With the acquisition, Loxam grew into the largest equipment rental company in Europe and the fourth largest in the world. Under Loxam’s ownership, Ramirent will continue its traditional operations under its own, well-known brand in the current nine operating countries.
